Lewisporte to host province’s first marina and boating conference

March 2, 2009 - The Town of Lewisporte and the Lewisporte Yacht Club, in association with other community organizations, will host the North Atlantic Marina and Recreational Boating Conference from June 18 – 20, 2009.

The first of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador , the conference will focus on the economic opportunities associated with marina infrastructure and recreational boating.

The event responds to the increasing interest and demand for recreational boating infrastructure in this province. Commodore Lloyd Fudge of the Lewisporte Yacht Club says, “Recreational boating is directly responsible for $291 million tourism related expenditures to the Atlantic Canada economy, with $127 million of this in Newfoundland and Labrador .”

The conference will explore issues related to marina development and management, and environmental stewardship. It will also feature a boat show to showcase the province’s boatbuilding industry.

Extending over two days, the event combines presentations from industry leaders with participant dialogue sessions. The goal is to identify priorities and actions that will help build the province’s marina and recreational boating industry.

“Our intention is to have the conference serve as a catalyst to move this exciting industry forward in Newfoundland and Labrador .  We want to seize the economic potential of this expanding global opportunity,” Mayor Bill Hooper says.

Chris Vincent, chair of the conference committee says, “In rural coastal communities, the sea has always fed our economic opportunities and nurtured our culture. It has sustained us in the past and to varying degrees it continues to sustain us today.  The trends in recreational boating, marine adventure tourism, eco-tourism and expedition cruising are opportunities for economic growth in parts of this province where traditional employment related to the sea is becoming less and less.”

The Conference Steering Committee has selected Daffodil Place and the Children’s Wish Foundation to receive a portion of the conference proceeds.

Thomas Dammrich’s bio and picture is attached:

It is expected that approximately 350 people will attend the Gala Dinner to hear Mr. Dammrich speak and to support efforts to further community enhancement of marine related opportunities and to raise funds to assist Daffodil Place and the Children’s Wish Foundation with their important projects.

The Dinner Committee is delighted that Glenn Blackwood, Executive Director and C.E.O. of the provincial Marine Institute will introduce Mr. Dammrich at the Dinner.  The Marine Institute is a recognized world leader in marine training and research with partnerships around the globe.  The Institute attracts students from many countries because of its centre of excellence reputation.

Mayor Bill Hooper says, “it was a real coup to have Mr. Dammrich visit Lewisporte and attend the Marina Conference and Boat Show and we are thrilled to have him as our guest speaker at the closing dinner.  The networking opportunities for recreational boating and related marine activities in our province as a result of having the President of NMMA at our events, will be substantial “

“While this first Marina Conference is being hosted by Lewisporte it is important to emphasize that in order to capture the growing economic opportunities associated with recreational power boating and yachting, we must formulate a provincial development and marketing strategy”, said Lewisporte, Town Manager, Perry Pond
